Welcome Back to School!

Welcome Back!!

We hope that you have had a relaxful and enjoyable summer.  As the old saying goes, “all good things must come to an end.”

Jemez Valley High School staff has been busy prepping and preparing for the new school year.  Staff members have participated in several trainings in the following areas:  college bound and technical trade school readiness, new math and science standards strategies, and aligning the standards to meet the individual needs of our students.

Preliminary PARCC Exam Results are in and we are excited to see what our students and staff have been able to accomplish.  The scores are preliminary, but they are something to be happy about.  Over the past two years we have been increasing the number of students meeting the academic standards set by the New Mexico Department of Public Education.  Last year we were a .96, less than 1 point, short from making a “B” on the New Mexico School Report Card.  With what are preliminary results show we could now have earned that “B” grade.  These results should be a motivational push for students, staff and parents to work harder and strive to achieve even higher academic success.

This year we are increasing our academic standards. The changes that we feel will assist us in this endeavor are included in a supplemental handbook entitled, “Jemez Valley High School Supplemental Handbook FY 17 – 18.”  On the first day of school all students will be given this supplemental handbook for them to reference throughout the year.

My request for the FY 17 – 18 school year is simple.  It will sound simple but, very appropriate.  The Jemez Valley High School needs you.  Jemez Valley High School needs you to:  encourage your child to get up every morning excited to learn, to be to school on time, to be productive and positive in the classroom, to greet your child every evening at home with a question about their day at school, to attend all of the parent teacher conferences and activities that your child participates in at school, and finally, challenge your child to be the very best that they can be both now and for in the future.

If you should ever have any questions please feel free to call me or email me.  My telephone number and email address is listed within the letterhead.

New Research Shows Nearly Half of American Parents Underestimate the Harm of School Absences

A student who misses just two days of school each month — 18 days total in the year — is considered to be chronically absent. However, many parents don’t realize that, even when excused or understandable, absences add up and can greatly impact a child’s education. In the United States, more than 6 million children are chronically absent from school each year....Click here to read the full article.
